27th convocation: 153 bag first-class as 8670 students graduate from LASU

No fewer than 153 students of the Lagos State University (LASU) have clinched the utopian First Class grade and will be awarded their honours degrees in the forthcoming convocation of the institution.

The management of the most digitally advanced state university in Nigeria, has also announced its decision to honour, within the convocation ceremony, some eminent Nigerians for their invaluable contributions to the development of university and the nation at large.

Briefing Journalists at the Senate building of the Institution on the development on Thursday, the Vice chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-bello, mni,fnli, NPOM, maintained that Prince (Hon.) Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, MON OON (Honorary Doctor of Literature, History, education and community development) Honoris causa; and Prince (Dr) Samuel Adedoyin, OFR (Honorary Doctor of Humane letters, Commerce, Industry and National Development) Honoria causa, will be on Thursday, 6th June, 2024 be admitted into honorary degrees of the great university as a mark of honour in appreciating their impact and contributions to the course of humanity.

Prof. Olatunji-bello stressed that out of 8670 graduands of the 27th Convocation ceremony, 153 graduands are passing out with First class Degree, while 3029 are graduating with second-class upper, 715 are going home with second lower, 195 graduands are in the Non-classified degrees, while 228 graduands finished with Passes.

According to her, 554 will receive diplomas certificates, while the remaining 2164 will receive various certificates of Higher Degrees and postgraduate diplomas. Among them, 66 will be conferred with professional doctoral degrees, 962 with Master’s degrees, 672 with professional Master, and 375 with postgraduate diplomas in their respective fields.

She also disclosed that Olaniyi Mubarak Olawale, who is graduating with a CGPA of 4.98 from the Department of Educational management, faculty of Education, is the overall best-graduating student and he will be awarded the prize during this convocation.

Olatunji-bello also announced that Former Governor of Lagos State and visitor to the University will deliver the convocation ceremony on Tuesday at Ojo Campus of the University.

The Professor of Physiology said His Excellency, Dr Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, CON will speak on “Embracing the future: Navigating the Intersection of Technology and Humanity”.

She added that the lecture will be chaired by a former secretary of the National Universities commission, (NUC), and a former Distinguished Professor of Science and Computer Education, Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola, OFR.

Speaking on achievements of the University, the University’s Numero Uno asserted that the status of the University has been elevated to the third most subscribed university in Nigeria while sustaining rankings for second time running as the best university in West Africa according to the UI GreenMetrics world University Ranking.

In the area of Infrastructural development, The erudite Vice-chancellor proclaimed the expansion of Infrastructure base with the addition of some new buildings which includes Femi Gbajabiamila Conference centre, the LASU ACEITSE STEM education laboratory Building and the Samuel Adedoyin ICT centre building commissioned in January and April, 2024 respectively.

The 9th substantive Vice-chancellor, also, in her words, expressed profound appreciation to the State governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu over his immeasurable and invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the University.

Aside from the convocation ceremony, various activities have been scheduled, including the Convocation staff sports competition at the Lasu sport centre on Thursday, May 30, Special Jumaat service at the University mosque, on Friday, May 31st, Thanksgiving service at University chapel of light on Sunday, 2nd June, 2024, and Coconut Breaking and Cultural at the Badagry gate on 3rd of June, 2024.

The News Agency Nigeria, NAN, reported that the University’s 27th Convocation ceremony will span for one week, from 30th of May, till 6th of June, 2024.
