Unijos announces 33rd & 34th combined convocation ceremony

University of Jos will hold its 33rd and 34th Combined Convocation Ceremonies from 11th to 13th May, 2023. The event which will take place at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium, Naraguta Campus of the University, will feature the Investiture of His Highness, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli CFR, Emir of Zazzau as the University’s new Chancellor.



Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya disclosed this when he led members of the University Management on a courtesy visit to the Emir at his palace in Zaria, Kaduna State.

According to Professor Tanko, being the Emir’s first Convocation since his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari, his Investiture as the new Chancellor will be conducted as part of the ceremony to be held on Saturday 13th May, 2023 before he can thereafter preside over the rest of the programme. The Vice-Chancellor further explained that, as it is customary, the University’s Council and Senate through the Council Ceremonial and Honorary Degrees Award Committee have also approved that the Chancellor should be conferred with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa during the Convocation Ceremony.

Professor Tanko said the University Council and Senate considered the Chancellor’s background as a Lawyer, Banker and Diplomat before arriving at their decision on the area of specialization he should be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree and commended Ambassador Bamalli for always providing exceptional leadership whenever he is called upon to do so.

The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that two other eminent Nigerians who have contributed to the founding and later development of UNIJOS will also be conferred with Honorary Doctorate Degrees alongside the Chancellor during this year’s Convocation. While Professor Suleiman Elias Bogoro, former Executive Secretary of TETfund will be conferred with Award of Doctor of Science Honoris Causa, elder Statesman, Ambassador Yahaya Kwande will be conferred with the Award of Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa, both for their role in making UNIJOS the highly rated University it is today.

Professor Tanko noted that the University’s 33rd and 34th Combined Convocation Ceremonies will take place across three days with the Award of Undergraduate Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates to be conducted on Thursday 11th May, 2023 and the Convocation Lecture to be delivered by 2007 Nobel Prize Laureate, Professor Anthony Nyong to hold on Friday 12th May 2023 while Saturday 13th May, 2023 will feature the Award of Postgraduate and Honorary Degrees in addition to the Chancellor’s Investiture.


The Vice-Chancellor had earlier congratulated the Emir of Zazzau over the successful celebration of the Eid-el-Fitri Sallah festival hosted by the Zazzau Emirate Council.

Responding, Emir of Zazzau and University of Jos Chancellor, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli congratulated the University for organizing its 33rd and 34th Combined Convocation Ceremonies and expressed delight that he will be attending such an event in the institution for the first time.

The Emir further expressed appreciation over the University’s decision to confer on him an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree following his investiture as Chancellor and assured that the gesture will further cement the longstanding relationship between Jos and the Zazzau Emirate.

Ambassador Bamalli recalled that University of Jos offered him his first University admission in 1986 but he was unable to study in the University because he could not adapt to the cold weather condition in Jos noting that although he did not study for his first degree in the University, destiny has now made it possible for him to be awarded with a higher degree by the same University.

The Emir stressed that he regards his appointment as UNIJOS Chancellor as a patriotic call to duty and pledged not to spare any effort to make the University the envy of its peers.

Highpoint of the occasion was the presentation of the Letters of Investiture and Conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degree to the Chancellor.
