University education is not just about academics but personal growth, development and preparation for challenges for the future-LASU VC

The Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, has said that university education is not just about academics, but, personal growth, development and preparation for the challenges of the future.
The Vice-Chancellor who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Adenike Omotunde Boyo, made this statement on Wednesday, 29th January 2025 at the 2024/2025 Faculty of Science orientation programme organised for freshers. The event was held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, main campus, Ojo, Lagos.
The insightful and well attended orientation programme was aimed at getting the new students informed about the activities of the faculty and also provide a platform for interactive session for parents.

In her address, the Numero Uno of the University, Profesor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, extended a warm welcome to the newly admitted students, reiterating that the University is committed to ensuring that their time in the citadel of learning is enriching and fulfilling.
She urged the new intakes of the faculty to be open-minded, curious, and eager to learn, adding that the Faculty of Science is renowned for its academic excellence, innovative research and commitment to producing multifacted graduates.
The Vice-Chancellor also encouraged the newly admitted students to participate actively in extracurricular activities, develop their skills and talents, and eschew social and academic vices capable of truncating their academic journey.
The Dean, Faculty of Science, Professor Moses A. Akanbi, in his address, established that the faculty is not a dumpsite for freshmen who failed to gain admission to medical courses, noting that all programmes domiciled in the faculty are worthwhile.

According to him, “the essence of the orientation ceremony is to sensitise the students as well as the parents about the faculty’. He further admonished the new intakes to draw out the best in their respective disciplines, assuring them that the sky is their starting point.
Representatives of the various departments in the Faculty were on ground to talk about the activities and core concepts of the departments. They are; Mr Gideon Adeyemo, Department of Biochemistry, Mr Mautin Ogun, Department of Botany, Mr Oyewole Toheeb, Department of Chemistry, Dr Gabriel Mekuleyi, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Biology, Dr Abdulkareem, Department of Mathematics, Mr Abdulraheem, Department of Microbiology, Dr Hussein, Department of Physics, Dr Oladele Teslim, Department of Science and Laboratory Technology, and Dr M Olasope, Department of Zoology and Mr Mautin Asokere from the Department of Computer Science
Orientation lectures were delivered by some senior members of staff which included the Director of Health Services, Dr Nasir Ariyibi who talked on Introduction to University Health Services; Deputy Registrar, Guidance and Counselling Unit, Dr Bukola Oyediji spoke on Introduction to University Guidance and Counseling Services; Faculty Finance Officer, Mrs Victoria Alabi spoke on Introduction to Bursary Services, Faculty Library Officer, Miss Oluwakemi F Babatunde, talked on Introduction to Library Services, Directorate of Information Communication and Technology (DICT) represented by Mr Jinadu Monsuru and Miss Bunmi Omole, spoke on Introduction to University ICT Services.

The newly admitted students were also engaged in PEP talk on imperative of parental guidance towards successful studentship, available students’ support services in the faculty, and the importance of emotional wellness in academic excellence by Dr Oluwafunmilayo O Ometan, Professor Moses Akanbi and Mr Olushola Olumide.
The Deputy Registrar and Faculty Officer, Mrs Olasumbo Edu-Ogunmokun talked to the freshmen on introduction to LASU students’ Handbook.
Admonition was given by an alumnus of the university and a lecturer in the Faculty of Science, Dr Olasunkanmi K Awote.
The informative event ended with a questions and answers session, closing remarks from the Dean of the faculty, as well as a vote of thanks from Mrs Tolu Oguntope.
